Vasco Medeiros

B.Sc. Biochemistry

Obtaining an International Baccalaureate Degree at Oeiras International School, with higher levels in Chemistry, Biology, and Portuguese, Vasco Medeiros has just graduated from the University of Providence College with a Bachelor of Science.  Before his work as an undergraduate, he first began his vocational training at the HIKMA Pharmaceuticals PLC plant in Ribeiro Novo. Here he worked as a validation specialist, tasked with monitoring the gauging and pressure equipment of the plant, as well as the inspection of weights and products.

While enrolled in Providence College, he began his research in catalysis, exploring the use of zinc complexes and diamine ligands to in catalytic reactions. These were then used in controlling the flux of palladium under oxidative additions. He later enrolled in a new lab where he worked as a brewing chemist, invested in the analysis of myrcene, linalool, and geraniol in different concentrations to delineate between the varying aromatics in beer. During his operating hours in the summers, he enrolled as a Chemistry Laboratory Technician, where he attained his prowess in wet chemistry and worked in the cataloging and classification of different proteins.

While in Providence College Vasco Medeiros has attained his certification from the American Chemical Society. He now works closely under the expertise of Dr. Kathleen Cornely and Dr. Tyler Stack in partnership with the “Malate Dehydrogenase CURE Community”. His research under the MCC CURE community is protein-centric, and is focused on adaption and evolution, folding and stability, cofactor stability, interactions in metabolons, and mechanisms in catalysis and regulation.

Though his work primarily falls under the field’s genetics and analytical chemistry, he also finds interest in other dynamic hobbies. Spending a decade in the Boy scouts, Vasco has worked at both “Camp Freedom” and “Camp Bayern” teaching wilderness survival, first aid, and cooking. Through his love of camping, he has attained the silver “Duke of Edenborough award”, and is now venturing to publish his first novel, “Arrium Clavis.”
