Glutamine (Gln), one of the most abundant amino acids with an uncharged amide as a side chain, is produced through the condensation of glutamate and ammonia. Although Gln is categorized as a non-essential amino acid, it is essential in various biological processes such as cell growth, protein synthesis, and regulation of acid-balance in mammalian kidneys.
Gln is the main source of nitrogen in cells for the production of hexosamines and nucleotides. Diets rich in glutamine are beneficial for patients who suffer from severe burns, cancer, AIDS/HIV, and Crohn’s disease. The Glutamine Colorimetric Assay kit available from BioVision is an easy-to-use and sensitive assay that is capable of detecting the biologically relevant Gln concentrations in several tissues and fluids.
The assay works on the basis of hydrolysis of Glutamine to Glutamate, which generates a stable signal directly proportional to the quantity of Gln in the sample. The assay can even detect as low as 25 µM of Gln in different biological samples.
