Real vs. Synthetic Tissue: Comparative Analysis

Surrogate samples (tissue phantoms) are commonly used to replicate human tissue in medical applications. Optical tissue phantoms are synthetic models that imitate human tissue properties, light propagation, and interactions.

They are mostly used for three primary purposes: calibrating optical devices, recording baseline reference measurements, and imaging the human body.

The application note below details an experiment conducted by Avantes to assess the reflection and transmission spectra of numerous tissue phantoms made of various materials (silicone and 3D-printed ABS plastic) and compare the results to real tissue.
