Overview
Mebiol® from Biomatrix is a thermoreversible hydrogel that gels at 37 °C and transitions back to a liquid at 4 °C. Also, Mebiol® is biologically inert, enabling simple spheroid development in the hydrogel phase, and simple cell retrieval at the time of the cold-melt phase.
Mebiol® Thermoreversible Hydrogel is known as 1 gm of poly(ethylene glycol) (PNIPAAm-PEG) and copolymer of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide). The specifying feature of Mebiol® is its temperature-reversible sol-gel transition. Chill Mebiol® to turn it into a sol (implying it handles like a liquid).
Heat Mebiol® to be converted into a solid hydrogel. The special thermoreversible feature enables supreme easy cell handling. Cultures have been seeded into cooled Mebiol® and recovered handily by cooling the culture vessel and centrifugation.
When the gel state has been attained, the highly lipophilic and network structure of the Mebiol® presents an effective niche for cell communication, cell proliferation, gas and mass exchange, and the safety of cells and tissue obtained from shear forces.
Mebiol® is harmless, user-friendly, 100% synthetic, and consists of high transparency. Published applications consist of pluripotent stem cell culture and stem cell expansion, and differentiation, cell implantation, spheroid culture, organ and tissue regeneration, drug delivery, and more.
Even though Mebiol® inhibits fibroblast growth, it was known to be commercialized as a cell/tissue culture reagent for chondrocytes, ES cells, and cancer cells.
